Artist- Andi Fasimpaur :: Studio- Mystic Spiral Studio
Andi Fasimpaur is a Dayton, Ohio ceramic artist, focusing on the creation of miniature works of art and the continuing relationship those works have with their creator and audience.
Andi attended Wright State University and received a BA in art with extensive coursework in art history. Her interest in art and its past and present context grew out of her extensive international travels as a military dependant. Her early works spanned a variety of media including photography, drawing, printmaking, sculpting and metalworking.
Andi continues to develop and refine her artistic gifts as a ceramic artist, and has taught classes and workshops on the subject at The Dayton Art Institute. Although she is no longer actively teaching, she is still highly involved in promoting the exchange of ideas and techniques.
Andi became interested in jewelry as a form of artistic expression because of the inherent intimacy of small scale work. She finds that a pendant invites the viewer to come closer, to turn it in their hands, and to explore it in a way that larger scale pieces might not. Her interest in decorative surfaces and finishes encourages her to explore innovative techniques such as pit firing in order to achieve fresh and varied effects.
In addition to her jewelry work, Andi continues to explore other forms which invite the same type of exploration and personal connection. Her hand-formed cups and mourning bottles are intended to be actively held and enjoyed by their owners. The mourning bottles, inspired by stories about the ceremonial collection of tears, reflect the enclosing shapes of nature, of seashells and seed pods. Andi’s cups draw upon her knowledge of art history, taking the form of ancient vessels found in South America and China. The cups are decorated with bands of repeating patterns inspired by the decoration found on early pottery, as well as the continuing patterns found on textiles and in architecture.
Through her writings and her participation in the National Conference for Education in the Ceramic Arts, Andi is developing a reputation for her strong use of texture and pattern. She continues to foster the cross-disciplinary exchange of concepts and methods among artists and the public at large. ’Andis latest article on ceramic technique was published in the Summer 2001 issue of Pottery Making Illustrated. An updated selection of her works can be viewed at http://www.mysticspiral.com.
The studio's name grows out of Andi's continuing fascination with labyrinths. For more information on them she strongly recommends The Labyrinth Society or the Mid-Atlantic Geomancy site on labyrinths. Both have practical information on how to make and use a labyrinth, as well as some excellent history.
